Growth Lancashire supports a Landmark occasion

06.11.18

Having had the opportunity to work on the project, we were pleased to attend the official opening of The Landmark, situated within the former Burnley Grammar School. The opening coincided with the latest Burnley Bondholders event, which as an initiative, continues to put Burnley firmly on the map.

Growth Lancashire was commissioned by a private developer to assist with proposals to convert the grade II Listed Grammar School building into a digital hub, providing offices and collaborative work space for local businesses working in digital industries. The project was devised to create the necessary inspirational infrastructure to reinforce Burnley’s digital cluster and retain digital talent in Burnley rather than losing it to nearby Manchester or Leeds – Burnley was recently ranked an impressive second place for digital jobs growth in Britain.

The building occupies a highly visible and prominent position in one of Burnley Town Centre’s most historic locations.  The building is a fine example of Victorian Gothic revival and was chosen to provide a distinctive, inspirational and atmospheric office location with unique character whilst offering all the facilities a modern digital or creative business demands.

Growth Lancashire was engaged early in the project to research and analyse the building and its surroundings to assess areas of significance. From the outset this was intended to help guide the development, and suggest how the heritage could help inform change to areas of the building that could best accommodate it.

The resulting heritage statement completed by Growth Lancashire not only protected and conserved important heritage elements within the building, but identified areas which could be developed and enhanced to help the building function more effectively for the future.
