Case Study: Garstang

In 2023, Wyre Council appointed the company to update six of its seven Conservation Area Character Appraisals over a two-year period. To support delivery of this review project, a new Conservation Assistant was appointed in June.

The project covers the conservation areas of Caldervale, Churchtown, Lower Dolphinholme, Garstang, Poulton-le-Fylde, and Scorton. The work involves conducting visual assessments of all properties within these areas, re-defining their special interest, identifying buildings of high architectural and historic importance, recognising key open spaces, trees, and views, and identifying the threats and pressures affecting each conservation area.

Progress has been strong, with a draft report completed for the update of the Garstang Conservation Area Character Appraisal. The new appraisal document captures and summarises the area’s special interest, drawing particular attention to its medieval weinds and passageways, historic market presence, and the 17th to 19th-century cottages along High Street, which contribute significantly to the character of the area.

Building assessment work has also begun in Poulton-le-Fylde Conservation Area, and the research required to update the historic context for all six conservation areas has now been concluded.
