Olympic torch bearer’s resourceful thinking wins business bursary

19.06.12

A young entrepreneur who will carry the Olympic torch in Blackburn this Saturday has won a bursary that will help launch his businesses website.

Sam Calvert, who will run on Preston New Road due to his charity work, is one of the first recipients of the Pennine Lancashire Youth Enterprise Fund, which awards bursaries to young people between 14 and 25 that demonstrate a flair for enterprise. The Youth Enterprise Fund is managed by Regenerate Pennine Lancashire with delivery support from the Community Foundation for Lancashire.

The bursary will go towards launching Bright Cloud Resources, a primary education resource website that Sam began working on in 2010 when he was 18. The website will allow teachers to download handouts, videos and powerpoints, as well as upload their own tried and tested lesson plans. The website is unique in that teachers can log on during lessons to access saved resources, avoiding the need to print them off or carry them on a USB stick or CD.

Sam said, “It’s an important year for me, as not only am I carrying the flame, but my own business is finally about to take off.”

“There is more support available than you might think. Darwen Academy have given me a place to work for 2 years, the Princes Trust has provided training and the Youth Enterprise Fund bursary has relieved a lot of pressure. It will allow me to temporarily bring in an extra person to work on the website and bring the launch date forward, as well as pay for web hosting.”

Steve Hoyle, Managing Director of Regenerate said, “We are really pleased to be able to help young people in Pennine Lancashire like Sam, who not only have great business ideas but also have the determination to make them a reality.”

Nicky O Brien of the Community Foundation for Lancashire said, “Sam was selected for the Youth Fund bursary as he could prove that he already has a strong business sense and motivation to pursue his ideas. We wish him luck with the launch of his website.”
