Blackburn student hits the right pitch at business event

02.01.13

A Blackburn College student has been presented with a £100 voucher for his personal selling skills and for delivering the perfect sales pitch.

Jamie Calderbank, 17, participated in a competition for Global Entrepreneurship Week at the college where he was challenged to deliver a 60 second sales pitch for a new business. It formed part of the ‘Mini Business Bootcamp’ event which also included free coaching from business experts on how to successfully start up and run a new business. The Bootcamp event, supported by the European Regional Development Fund, was organised by Regenerate Pennine Lancashire in partnership with Winning Pitch.

Jamie presented to a room of 50 peers and a video of his sales pitch was posted online along with all the students that took part.

Jamie said: “I take business focussed courses at college – accounts, business, maths and career academy – so am really pleased to have been recognised for my sales pitch. I didn’t feel too nervous despite all of the people there.”

Shelia Calderbank, Jamie’s mother, said: “We’re so proud, it’s about time he has received a reward for his hard work. He’s like a human calculator as he’s so good at working out problems and will make a great accountant after college.”

Rona McFall, Enterprise and Employment Manager at Regenerate Pennine Lancashire, said: “All the sales pitches were great, but we liked Jamie’s as he was really enthusiastic and dealt well under the pressure. We hope the event got Jamie and the other students thinking about enterprise and personal selling skills. Pennine LEAP gives people free support to get their business running, regardless of their age.”
