Manufacturer uses new technology and innovation to expand business

An Altham based company that manufacturers custom parts for the engineering sector, has seen its business increase after embracing new technology.

Axiom Imports Ltd produce tailored parts for manufacturers. After encountering delays and poor service from suppliers, Axiom decided to purchase their own laser cutter machine, so that they could reduce both time and costs by creating more parts in house.

However, high value software was required to operate the laser cutter. Axiom’s joint Managing Director Greg Stitt approached the Lancashire Innovation Network, a scheme funded by the Local Government owned Regenerate Pennine Lancashire, for financial assistance. The programme is made possible with funding from the European Regional Development Fund.

Greg said: “The quality of a cutter is largely dependent on tailored software. The grant we sourced through Regenerate allowed us to get software that would have been beyond our reach. Their advisor helped us select a software supplier, using a thorough system to ensure that they were perfect for the job.”

“The laser system was initially just to safeguard our jobs, but the new technology and flexibility has actually helped us expand. It allowed us to create a full time post immediately and if things continue the way they are, we will employ a few more staff in the next 12 months.”

The new computer system is one of several innovations Axiom have undertaken in order to grow their business.

Greg said: “When Craig and I started the business 7 years ago it was solely as a project management company.”

“We adapted when we saw how beneficial it would be to produce products ourselves and have since bought several machines. We also recently moved to Altham Business Park from Trawden where we now have great motorway links and are able to trade both across the UK and internationally. We trade as far as Australia.”
